I am a lip biter.
Not in that super cute, rom-com kinda way were the lady love interest turns away from the camera while sheepishly biting her lip and looking coyly up at her prospective beau. {{{insert puking face emoji here}}}
No, me… I am more a “bites lip while thinking, writing, reading, doing farm chores, foraging”– basically ANYTHING that requires a modicum of concentration — kinda lip biter.
The results? Flaky, dry, desperate lips.
You guys… I have a solution. I should probably put it into practice more often. Because a homemade lip scrub with sugar and rich, emollient oils is a sweet thing indeed.
What You Will Need For a Homemade Lip Scrub with Sugar
- Sugar: I like to use a organic demerara or unrefined cane sugar. The granules are somewhat larger but soften in the oils, providing good exfoliating action from this homemade lip scrub.
- Coconut oil: The semi-solid state of coconut oil at room temperature make is a practical, as well as deeply nourishing oil to base for this sugar lip scrub.
- Cocoa butter: This rich emollient butter leads a decadence and a subtle chocolate-y aroma to this exfoliating lip scrub. These cocoa butter wafers are extremely easy use and melt beautiful, while also helping the sugar particles in this homemade lip scrub say in suspension
- Herbs: Never miss the opportunity to infuse some herbal goodness into warm oils and butters. When making small-ish batches of this exfoliating lip scrub I like to use the double boiler method to infuse my oils. My favorite herbs include calendula, peppermint and lemon balm.
- Essential Oils: While totally optional, essential oils take this sugar lip scrub to an “ah, heck, I am going to spoil myself rotten” place. Try ginger for rosy, plump lips, sweet orange for smooth and glow-y lips, or peppermint if you find your self craving Junior Mints or Andes after-dinner chocolate wafers.
How to Use Your Sugar Lip Scrub
This exfoliating lip scrub should be applied to lightly damp lips. Using clean hands and light, sweeping motions, gently massage the scrub on the lip surface. Rinse with warm water and a washcloth. This rich, nourishing exfoliating lip scrub is not only amazing for offering a soft and sweet pucker, but is also excellent for removing highly pigmented lipsticks and lip stains.
