I cannot remember how or why I was reading such a “how the stars eat” type article – but some years ago I read some silly article on Gwyneth Paltrow.  Clearly, I had some time on my hands and poor availability of quality reading material – maybe I was in a dentist office.  The actual location escapes me.  This article touted some “amazing” cacao shake with some magical pixie dust (seriously, there was some kind of “magical” dust added).  And some health food juice bar place was selling this magical shake at $20 a serving.

Cringe.

As a frugal person, this killed me.

I mean – whyyyyy?

Rhetorical question.  Culturally, we seem to want to emulate the rich and famous.  But that isn’t a subject that I am qualified to cover.  Herbs? Yes.  Homesteading? Yes. Food Preservation? Yes.  Societal fixations on the wealthy and beautiful?  Nope.  Not going to touch that one.

Casual societal observations aside, a few things struck me about this supped cacao shake.  It had some really amazing herbs.  And it sounded tasty, truth be told.  Chocolate, vanilla, and a bunch of invigorating herbs and spices.  Yum.

Too much time has passed by for me to remember precisely which herbs and spices in Gwyneth’s GOOP approved cacao shake – and I don’t know what in the world “moon dust” is – but here is my take on the shake with the best of the best from Mountain Rose Herbs!

Cacao

Clearly, this shake would not be as decadent without the ever lovely cacao.  As a member of the “superfood” lineup of celebrity botanicals, cacao boasts magnesium, sulfur, potassium, zinc, manganese, copper, and phosphorous.

Chia Seeds

Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-chia.  Yes, I would be from a generation for which that commercial jingle will always and forever be the first thing that comes to mind whenever I hear chia mentioned.  This “superfood” seed is an outstanding thickening agent that contains dietary fiber and protein.  Chia also has calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, and manganese.

Maca

Yet, another so-called superfood for our superstar cacao shake is maca.  This adaptogenic herb is a source of phytonutrients as well as vitamin C, iron, copper, calcium, potassium, and manganese.

Cordyceps

Considered (yep, you guessed it) another superfood, cordyceps are unique if peculiar ingredient. The “caterpillar fungus” offers diverse phytonutrients which influence its adaptogenic and tonic action on the body.

Rhodiola

Can you imagine shoehorning in yet one more superfood into our superstar cacao shake? Indeed, we have one more!  Rhodiola promotes a healthy response to stress and supports adrenal function.

Vanilla Powder
This optional ingredient is a tasty luxurious addition to our cacao shake.  At this point, we are giving ourselves the star treatment, so why not indulge ourselves in with a bit of real vanilla.  A little goes a LONG way and adds just the right flavor to the blend

How do all these superstar superfoods add up?  Well, first – this is one yummy shake blend, whirred up with some creamy coconut milk or other non-dairy milk (dairy can interfere with some nutrient absorption from the cacao).  The shake can be sweetened to taste based on your preference. This invigorating blend is a perfect way to start the morning.  It might even steal the spot of your morning mocha.

Now, how is it on the ole pocketbook?  Well, it’s not quite as frugal as my other blends from this series, but you don’t need Gwyneth Paltrow sized budget to make this shake. The recipe costs only about $25 for a pound based off of quantity!  And of the single ounce of vanilla powder is a little rich for your budget – a good quality vanilla flavored stevia extract is a decent substitute since you will likely want to sweeten anyway.
