I am a bather.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good shower.  Showers are a business transaction for me though – I am in, I wash up, I rinse, and I am out.  A perfect antidote for a grubby day of homestead work or a sweaty afternoon spent foraging.  But what I really love is a long luxurious soak in the tub to relax, unwind, and collect my thoughts. Sometimes I like to up the ante by adding a little adding Epsom salt and essential oils (from Mountain Rose Herbs, of course), but lately I wanted to take the bath to a new level of awesomeness. A particularly herbal and homestead-y level of awesomeness.  I’m talking a relaxing herbal buttermilk soak kind of awesomeness.

Ohhhh, yeah.  Now, this is a bath fit for a queen.  Or king.  Because everybody deserves to bathe in sheer awesomeness.

The ingredients are simple – just herbs, Epsom salts, and dried powdered buttermilk.  But the results are phenomenal.  Deeply relaxed muscles, smooth practically patrician skin, and subtle aroma of rose, lavender, and chamomile.   This herbal buttermilk bath is the good stuff.  I promise.

Herbal Buttermilk Bath Soak Ingredients

Epsom Salts

Actually a mineral (magnesium sulfate), Epsom salts are much touted for a host of benefits to the lucky bather.  Epsom salts are a wonderful way to soak away tense, painful, and cramped muscles.  Of particular note is that magnesium in Epsom salts can be absorbed through the skin according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, delivering the much-needed mineral to a taxed and tired body.

Rose, Lavender, and Chamomile

These calming aromatic herbs promote mental and physical relaxation, loosening tense muscle and minds.  I grind these herbs to a fine powder to disperse into the water and not clog the drain.  They leave the lightest floral aroma on your skin, giving this bath some serious aromatherapy credibility.

Buttermilk Powder

You have probably heard the story of the preternaturally beautiful and legendarily powerful ruler and temptress Cleopatra.  Her beauty is often associated her glowing skin owed to her frequent milk and honey baths.  Buttermilk powder is full of lactic acid, which acts as a gentle exfoliant smoothing and brightening your skin.

There you have it. An herbal buttermilk bath soak to leave you relaxed, delicately scented, with skin so radiant it could captivate at least a couple high ranking Roman officials.
